West Alton, MO Evacuation Flooding – 5/5/2017

The Mississippi River rose above major flood stage this week, becoming the sixth highest flood height for the river near the city of West Alton. A voluntary evacuation order was issued for the town of 500. Many residents left on their own will; however, some stayed. One resident lifted his house thirteen feet on blocks to prepare for the possible flood. Levees in the area were beginning to leak and officials are considering a mandatory evacuation if levee failure appears imminent.

Rivers Pointe Fire Department officials were conducting levee patrols throughout the day, looking for any signs of levee failure.
