The first big severe weather event of the Spring unfolded across the central part of the country. Storms across the southern part of Missouri took a while to get going, but packed quite a punch with large hail and wind.

Is this winter’s last gasp for southern IL? It’s the big question as a winter storm moved in on Sunday less than 24 hours after the region saw temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. While not much snow accumulation is expected, up to a couple inches at best, it has broken the streak of warm days seen across southern Illinois where high temperatures have been 50-degrees or better since March 7.

Video package shot in Carbondale, Illinois in Jackson County where the high temperatures on Saturday, less than 24 hours ago, reached 68-degrees. Gusty winds have also been experienced with gusts up to 30mph consistently through the day.

It’s not as cold anymore across southern Illinois as temperatures soared into the upper 50s and even a few locations hitting 60-degrees for the first time in March, and for a few areas, the first time hitting the 50s for nearly a month.

People were out and about today as the temperatures peaked near 60. Warmer weather is expected through the weekend into early next week when temperatures will rise well into the 60s.
